An insightful and well-attended lecture on the theme of Blue Economy was organized on 16 January 2026 at the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India, New Delhi. The programme was marked by the distinguished presence of Dr. Markandey Rai, eminent policy thinker and author, and Dr. N. K. Santokhi, Director General, along with senior officials and participants from the Ministry.

The session aimed to enhance understanding of the Blue Economy and its strategic relevance in sustainable development and evidence-based policymaking. Dr. N. K. Santokhi welcomed and introduce Dr. Rai, who delivered a detailed lecture on Blue Economy, explaining that it represents an integrated approach to economic growth, environmental sustainability, and responsible utilization of ocean and coastal resources. He highlighted key sectors, including fisheries, maritime transport, coastal and marine tourism, ocean-based renewable energy, and marine research, as critical drivers of long-term economic resilience.

Officials and other participants listened attentively to the lecture, reflecting strong interest in the subject and its policy implications. The discussion provided valuable insights into how data, statistics, and programme implementation frameworks can support the planning and monitoring of Blue Economy initiatives at national and regional levels.

A key highlight of the programme was the presentation of books on the Blue Economy by Dr. Markandey Rai to Dr. N. K. Santokhi Ji. This gesture symbolized the importance of knowledge exchange, research-based dialogue, and collaboration in strengthening informed decision-making. Dr. Markandey Rai emphasized that the Blue Economy holds immense potential for inclusive and sustainable growth if supported by robust data systems and coordinated policy action.

Dr. Rai had a meeting with the Secretary of the Ministry Dr. Saurabh Garg, and he welcomed Dr. Rai and apologised that he would not be able to attend due to prior commitments, but get feedback and see the possibilities to work closely.
